Feeling Secure During Transitions: Supporting Students Through Changes at Home

My Project
I work with elementary school students that are creative and curious learners. They are loving, resilient, and eager to develop positive relationships with the adults that they work with. Many of my students are experiencing changes in their home life such as divorce, separation, new siblings, foster care, and homelessness. This project will provide books for bibliotherapy to introduce students to characters that are going through similar life experiences and help provide explanations to students in a child-friendly way. It will also supply students with a dollhouse and dolls that will be used for play therapy in counseling sessions, providing students with the tools that they need to safely explore their individual situations, express themselves, and practice navigating through difficult life transitions. Through story time and play therapy sessions, students will gain the language they need to communicate their experiences, understand that they are not alone, and learn new coping mechanisms to use when faced with big emotions. These skills will support my students in developing positive mental health outcomes as they continue to grow.
