My Students
I have been blessed to work with some of the most amazing students. So many of them come to school each day in spite of the some very hard circumstances at home. Many of them are still enduring the hardship that Harvey left in its wake. Despite all of that, they are vibrant and curious. They are inspiring! Regardless of how I feel in the morning, I see their faces, they smile and hug you, and are so happy to see you. I can't help but want to do my best for them.
We are a school that lost everything in the flood.
The water sat in our building for over a week as well as in the surrounding neighborhoods. Many of our students come from low income families who are still piecing together their lives.
My Project
It is difficult to focus on learning when you don't feel good about yourself. Each week, I provide a guidance lesson on being not only resilient but kind. For the younger students, this concept is a little harder to grasp. Read alouds are a normal part of their school day.
With your help, I can infuse character building lessons within their regular schedule while training teachers on effectively carry the message of resiliency and kindness throughout the day.
I would like to target many of the social issues that they are learning to navigate through. If we teach our children how to resolve problems early, to consider other's feelings, and to appreciate reading, we can have a huge impact on them feeling successful at school.
