Feeling Comfortable in the Counselor's Office

Help me give my students a pleasant environment when they visit the the school counselor's office for emotional support.

My Students

I am a school counselor at an inner city public school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I work with a lovely, curious, energetic, group of youngsters who are in Kindergarten through fifth grade. In large part, the students particularly enjoy reading and doing creative projects for social studies, science and black history month.

Some of the students have been impacted by unfortunate and sometimes traumatic events that are common in inner cities.

However, Rowen students, in general, are courageous and resilient. The students show up to school on a regular basis and actively engage in instruction. Also, on a daily basis, the students consciously contribute to an improved and positive school climate, by participating in a school-wide positive behavior intervention support program.

My Project

Everyday, students view and visit the counselor's office as a place of solace. Hence, as the school counselor for approximately five hundred students, the goal is to always provide an environment that is pleasant, calm and cheerful.

When students are in distress and/or in need of a place for de-escalation, the counselor's office has to be conducive to supporting the emotional needs of students.

Thus, comfortable seating, age appropriate decorative rugs, books about emotions and character development and games have proven to be impactful. In such an environment, students are more inclined to relax, feel comfortable, disclose feelings and regroup. Therefore, the support of Donors Choose in the acquisition of these items will be immensely appreciated.

Together, we can help improve the quality of life for students. Thank you in advance!
