My Project

The school at which I work is located in the high-needs neighborhood of Brownsville, in Brooklyn, NY. There is a great need for additional Chewies and sensory objects that will greatly benefit my students with an appropriate replacement for much-needed sensory relief and calmness.

Having a variety of chewy devices would allow our students to achieve sensory support in a proper manner.

My students are challenged with a mix of neurological challenges that stem from diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Autosomal Disorders (syndromes), and Cerebral Palsy. Most are minimally verbal or non-verbal, but appear to comprehend more than they can vocalize. A common phenomenon that is evident is the profound sensory integration need for our students, including mouthing objects and chewing on items in their environment.

Each student’s chewing abilities and needs vary according to size, shape, and softness/hardness. By assigning designated chewy tubes and chewy items to each specific child, according to their needs, it will allow the student to bite down or receive the necessary sensory input in a sanitary manner. The chewies will be appropriately disinfected and will only belong to the specific student.

An obvious difference is evident when the student’s sensory needs are met during a lesson. In an effort to soothe the students and achieve internal neurological organization during lessons, I employ a variety of sensory objects.

Each student reacts differently to a specific object. The leading goals are to facilitate the child’s focus on the task and avoid negative behaviors. Additionally, the children can develop motor skills as they engage in holding, squeezing, pulling, stretching, and brushing. By offering a variety of sensory and fidget objects for our students, we will assist them in advancing their sensory integration abilities.
