My Project
Music class is a great time of day. My students and I greet one another with big smiles, singing voices, clapping hands and tapping toes. I have been able to use more children's literature--rhythmically speaking or singing the words while my students keep a steady beat, play an ostinato, chant along, or sing a refrain. My kiddos really enjoy when they create together using literature as the inspiration for rhythm, movement, singing and playing instruments.
Literature can be a joyful, whole-body activity for children - I want to give my students the agency to bring images and text to life - using voice, body, imagination and collaboration.
Music is essential for so many reasons. A very basic one is that meaning is communicated from one person to another through the rhythm and melodic cadence of our language. Whether we notice it or not, stories and conversations are compositions.
The instruments in this project support the music-making experience. Frame drums are a fundamental element for group rhythm and movement compositions, and a few more helps us get closer to our goal of building a full classroom set. We also need replacement mallets for a few of our xylophones.
I am new to the Orff-Schulwerk developmental approach to music education. Every day I'm working to deepen my understanding and practice from the exciting journey I began in Level 1. The scope of Orff-Schulwerk is immense. I need more resources to focus my planning sequences and teach my students effectively.
