This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my classroom, there are 13 little ones who are growing in all areas. One of the areas that everyone is working on is communication (both expressive and receptive language). Due to this, my students are may have difficulties expressing their frustrations, sadness, hunger, tiredness, when they are overstimulated, etc. This leads to meltdowns and moments where they kick, hit, throw themselves on the floor, spit, etc. I have several outlets in place for them to release energy, but have limited ways in which they can regulate their emotions. Currently, we take them for walks, offer noise cancelling headphones, have a tent, offer hugs, and ways for them to breathe.
While collaborating with the Occupational Therapist at School 21, we decided that having more ways for the students to regulate their emotions will support their learning.
We currently have a bright tent that is well loved from being at School 21 for several years. I am requesting support in providing them with a better suited quiet space (black out tent) where they are able to be cozy and isolate themselves until they are ready to join us in the activities. This tent can support students who are overstimulated. Additionally, I am requesting items that will support students in further regulating their emotions. This includes a cat night light (to gain their interest in the space), a breathing board (for the children to have a concrete tool to support breathing), two weighed pets (cat and dog to offer them the ability to pet them and feel the weight on their lap), and a rocking chair to provide the swinging motion that many students with Autism Spectrum Disorder long for.
