Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in a Title I school. Although my students may live in an impoverished neighborhood, my students are vibrant and will brighten up your day! They can be an energetic bunch! They are hard workers and love to show this to anyone who walks into our classroom or whoever they see in the hallway!
We currently have about 600 students in our school and all of them receive a free breakfast and lunch (sometimes dinner) every day.
Our school has a transient population, our students do not always have a stable place to call home. Some of our students are homeless. Some of our students have been placed in shelters with their families while in between places to live.
My Project
I am requesting play doh and snacks to support my students in crisis in order to create a nurturing classroom.
"You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think"-A.A.Milne
Some of my students in previous years have been homeless, unbeknownst to me or anyone at my school. Families undergoing stressors, such as homelessness, loss of job/income, et cetra can find it embarrassing to share this and are unaware how schools can help support their child and their families in their time of need.
I am requesting play doh and snacks to help my students who have had traumatic events, such as homelessness, to feel comfortable in my classroom. Play doh is a stress reliever: help them relax and calm down. I want to engage my students with play doh dialogues-I will sit with my students and have friendly conversations (get to know you/beginning of the year) while making different things with the play doh. It is important to establish a nurturing and comfortable environment to keep students feeling secure and safe. The snacks will fill their little bodies and make them energized to engage to learn! Food is an important factor to making First Graders ready to learn and feeling nurtured.
Hopefully this project will encourage all my students to feel nurtured and secure in my classroom.
