Feeding The Soul

My Students

"What are we cooking today, Mrs. W?" My students bombard me with this question daily. We are fortunate to have traditional Family and Consumer Classes. The Nutrition Classes have become a favorite part of the daily routine for many students. I would like to continue our scheduled labs.

Our school is in a small rural community in Southern Indiana.

Students in FACS classes are in grades 7-12, energetic, rambunctious, and playful. We are a semi-poverty stricken area with loving yet financially struggling families. Students are allowed to take home what they make/bake in classes, which in some instances might become the evening meal. The students in afternoon sporting events will often take snacks to their teammates. Young people are always hungry, enjoy learning to become more independent and serve as mentors to each other.

My Project

Students will use the ovens and storage containers to be able to continue the school routine they had before the tornado. We will focus on nutrition lessons that will help them at home for independent meals since many of them have home responsibilities that includes meal preparation. I hope to provide healthy, family friendly, time-saving menus they will enjoy preparing/serving. Students will learn that healthy food choices can be served at home and will not have to come from fast food service.

In the wake of the tornado we sustained a few weeks ago, I saw one of my students with a rake in his gloved hands.

He grinned at me and asked when we were cooking again. When we are settled in our new temporary facility it would be beneficial to get the students back to their routine. The donations from this request will allow us to prepare simplistic, fun and healthy menus. The students would be so thankful.
