Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The students in our urban, underprivileged and underperforming school district are often coming to school eager to eat any of the breakfast or lunch offerings. Many of them try to take home extra sides and fruits. Students have been given a longer lunch period to ensure that they have enough time to eat as well as decompress so that they can do their best learning. Unfortunately the lack of cafeteria support staff and space makes for a loud lunch experience with many behavior issues and complaints from students. This takes precious time and energy away from learning as they return to their classrooms.

A smart TV in the cafeteria will allow students to watch mindful practice videos at the beginning and end of the lunch period as well as read-alouds, conversation starters, and other options that will give them a peaceful, calm, and restorative lunchtime.

Lunch can be an integral part of their school day, providing support for their social-emotional well being as well as helping their minds be ready to learn afterwards. Thank you in advance for your help!
