My 6th graders are amazing readers and writers. I work in an urban district in Kalamazoo, MI with a diverse set of students. In order to encourage a love of writing, we focus on a variety of different types of writing: narrative, creative, argumentative, research, and informational.
My students' voices are powerful, and they need to be shared.
Every Friday, I love hearing updates to ongoing creative writing projects like "Burrito 8," and I can't wait to talk about biographical research reports because we have people we are looking up to in this world. Middle schoolers have opinions. Whether it is in an argumentative paper or in a personal narrative ghost story, I can't wait to see what my students will share with me week after week.

My Project
Every Friday, we Friday Free Write! My students are given free writing time in class, and they report year after year that this is their favorite part of the week. The idea is simple: Write about what makes you happy. You want to write a story about unicorns pooping potatoes? Yes. You want to create a screenplay based on your favorite TV show? Sign us up. You want to write about your weekend? Let’s hear it. Any lesson that allows our students to be themselves, we have to make time for it.
My students are stories in motion.
