My Project
Our first reading unit of the year is "Observing Nature." The passages and content are challenging, but the more we work on it, the more the students understand it. One of the reasons they don't understand it is because they don't have a lot of background knowledge about the topic. In the first passage, the narrator observes various birds outside of his home. I would like to add these bird feeders to our classroom windows in the hope of being about to observe some birds ourselves.
Another text discusses the diet of birds, focusing on their love for the fat.
The narrator feeds them suet, so we will make some for our local birds. The students will use a functional text to create the suet in class. Then, we will go on a nature walk and hang them around the school campus. This is always a fun activity because they get to "cook" and then give back to nature! The materials in this project will allow us to provide materials to all of our fourth grade classes next year.
