Help me give my students the opportunity to learn on a full belly with snacks.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
First things first, the students I teach are some of the strongest children that I know. The district that they come from is categorized as Title I. As many of you may know, this means that a large percentage of these students live at or below the poverty line. Their lives can range from being raised by a grandparent or a single parent to living in hotels for extended periods of time. Each student has his or her own back story. These are factors that play a huge role in their education that I personally cannot control.
I also think these factors play a huge part into why my students are so awesome!
Although a vast majority of my students face adversity at home, they are able to come into their first grade classroom and become kids again. I have done this by allowing students to be themselves through their learning. They are surrounded by nothing but love, stability and security. When students are allowed to be themselves, the educational gains are endless.
These materials will make a huge different in the day to day life of my students. Working in a Title I district, all students receive breakfast and lunch free of charge. Although this is a great initiative, students still come to me when they are hungry. I will not let a student go hungry through the school day. Therefore, I dish out some of my lunch to quench their hunger.
Students cannot be expected to learn if they are constantly hungry.
Hunger effects their ability to learn to their full potential. The different items that I am requesting will be given out at different points of the day. The fruit snacks will be given out in the morning. The Goldfish will be given out if a student is still hungry before or after lunch. The Takis are a student favorite. They will be given out at the end of the day. Once we receive these nutritious snacks, my students will be able to fulfill their ability to succeed at school.
