My Students

Our students attend a rural public high school, which serves about 650 students. We are located in an area where the socioeconomic status of many residents is low. Many students have parents who are out of work. Our school relies heavily on state funding and this year, we are struggling once again due to the state not coming through with that funding. Programs and teachers are being cut and our students are feeling the brunt. Our students are creative and kind and they strive to reach their goals no matter what obstacles they face. They continue to achieve success despite more challenges and fewer resources. They forge ahead without complaints. Although funds are low, our students' passion for books hasn't dulled one bit. Please help keep this thirst for literature alive by supporting our school.

My Project

Our library is grossly lacking in bilingual and Spanish books for our native Spanish speakers, as well as our Spanish curriculum and programs. It is long past time to cultivate a Spanish and bilingual resource collection and assure that it thrives moving forward. We won a grant last spring and made a dent in this goal, but we still have a long way to go! Our native Spanish speakers need Spanish and bilingual books that challenge and entice them to be lifelong readers. If we win this grant, students will have access to classic works written in Spanish such as Romeo and Juliet, as well as other novels that represent current trends in young adult literature such as Por Trece Razones by Jay Asher. Furthermore, it will enhance the collection and add to the books we won through DonorsChoose.org in the spring. Please help me help our Spanish department and the students it serves.
