My students are our future scientists! They energetically enter the class, smiling, giving out fist bumps, and they are full of curiosity. They are unstoppable at solving problems, and designing innovative solutions.
They are creative, courageous, and enthusiastic problem solvers.
We need to give them the tools they need today, to strengthen their skills for tomorrow. They love conquering challenges. We need these kinds of innovators in our communities. There isn't a day that goes by where they don't demonstrate that they will make a difference in our world!
My Project
My students are capable of conquering whatever academic challenges they face in Life Sciences.
It is difficult to concentrate, think and focus though when you have not eaten all day, and sometimes longer.
I have high expectations for my students, and they want to succeed and do well. With empty stomachs and often other basic essentials missing in their lives, they are doing the best they can just to show up. My goal is to make sure they have a chance to not only be prepared with school supplies, but to have healthy essential nutrients so they can be active, and feed their brains at the same time.
When students do have their own snacks, they are unhealthy with little nutritional value. These healthy snacks will provide proteins and other healthy ingredients from fruits and vegetables. I want them to know they can eat something that is high in proteins that will also help them make healthier choices. We will compare the ingredients list with those of the students' common unhealthy snacks and see how they differ. We will link these snacks to how our bodies produce energy (mitochondria), and how our nervous systems use energy from healthy foods to function at its best.
We may not be able to feed them every day, or change their economic status. Not yet. However, if we can enrich their experiences with healthy foods, and improve their academic focus, they can make gains that will change their lives in the long run.
With their basic life essential needs met, they can go back to conquering the challenges of academics and preparing for the future with full stomachs and lightbulbs shining over their heads!
