My students need filament to make their creations come to life on the 3D Printer.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Steve Jobs once said that "Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." My students are creating some amazing designs - so many that we are quickly running out of filament for our 3D printer.
My students attend one of the oldest middle schools in a semi-rural town in Arizona.
Even though we have a major city close by, most of my students have never gone there. My students face numerous challenges on a daily basis; many come from lower income homes that are struggling to get by, let alone worry about education.
My job is to inspire kids to become scientists, to dream big, and that with an education there is nothing they can't do. My greatest joy is to talk to a kid who didn't like science before when she tells me how much she loves it now, and that she is now starting to expand on experiments we've done in class at home. Now my students are coming in almost bouncing just excited to share with me what they have learned, created or built.
My Project
With the 3D printer we received through Donor's Choose, my students are now designing and printing amazing things. We are using the on-line CAD program Tinkercad to learn basic computer aided drafting. The students then transfer that design to the 3D printer and watch their designs take shape. They are so excited by the 3D printer, they tell everyone who walks into the room about it and then show then what they have made - combs, bracelets, nuts and bolts, and robots. They are now looking at designing buildings and then printing out 3D models. Because they have done so much designing and printing we are quickly running out of the plastic the 3D printer uses. This is actually the second time we are requesting filament, because the kids are designing and creating so often.
The long term goal of the project is to develop middle school students who can successfully advance to the high school with a solid foundation in science and engineering.
Our school is an APS STEM focus school, and we love giving our students engineering challenges.
Kids love doing science and engineering projects. It is amazing! Please help purchase the 3-D printer filament so the kids can continue to see their designs come to life.
