I have been hosting an after school club for almost four years now. This is one of the only after school club offerings available at my school right now. This is a great opportunity for students to build community and socialize after being relatively isolated for the past couple of years. It is great to see students connect and meet new people while doing something they already love to do: play video games. This provides a very supportive and accessible way for students to socialize and build friendships. It also gives students a warm, inviting space to visit before they head home.
Students are hungry by the end of the day, so supporting them with snacks is very important!
The community we have built this year has attracted many different students. Some students report just needing a place to be before they go home. They are just developing their sense of self outside their family and for some of them, they want more time away from home. Others attend because it is a safe space to be queer. There are many queer students who attend and connect with one another in this space. This is important considering we no longer have a pride club. Lastly, there are students who don't socialize much during the school day, but use this as a time to connect with their peers. This is just provides a place for students to come together and be kids!
Help me finish the year strong with some yummy snacks that'll help us celebrate the community we have built!
