My Students
My classroom is an inner city low social economic classroom. All of my students receive free lunch and breakfast. I found my students to still be hungry after their modest breakfast because many had not eaten since lunch at school the day before. I began to buy snacks for before and after lunch and I have seen improvement in not only academics but also behavior as it is hard to not be cranky when you are hungry. Being a single parent myself, I am finding it hard to continue this habit financially and could use some help!
My Project
My students come hungry and it makes it hard to learn. I get grants for supplies but am unable to purchase food with it. The modest breakfast and free lunches they receive are not enough when some don't get enough to eat at home. Learning doesn't happen until their basic needs are met. Many of our students are homeless and need extra food for sustainability. They have so many other obstacles to endure, food shouldn't have to be one. I have seen a difference in behavior and academics when I have been able to give them snacks and what them to continue to be successful! My students need a variety of snacks such as fruit snacks, crackers, trail mix, cookies, and peanut butter pretzels so they focus on learning instead of being hungry.
