Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students choose to come to George Washington High School after unsuccessful attempts to gain credit at their home High School. Our students choose GW because we have a reputation for supporting our students through the up and down lives that many of them lead.
Our students find success as we work together, like a family, to give our students a sense of belonging, supportive teachers and a purposeful classroom experience that prepares them for a bright and hopeful future.
My Project
After learning more about how trauma can impact the physical body and the brain, I had to do something to help my hungry students! My students often complain about hunger. Students who are fed, are more likely to calm, reduce stress, control impulses and improve retention. I know that if they are hungry their tender minds are on something other than my lesson!
My students are hungry and need more nutritious food to help get through a class!
My students are adaptable, but with hunger on their minds, I know I am constantly competing with what really matters to them as they struggle to concentrate, learn and behave to the classroom expectations.
