Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“ I like school better than home” this is often said to me by my students of different ages, ethnicities, genders, and religions. The one thing my students have in common is that they are living in poverty. Many of my students live in homes without heat, running water, food, and a bed to sleep in.
My students deserve more!!!
I cannot change the hardships and circumstances my students face, but I’d like to change my classroom. I want to create a warm, welcoming classroom that my students can call, “ their home away from home.” I’d like to create a safe space for my students to learn and thrive.
My Project
Please help my students have access to snacks so they can focus. My students come from low-income families. They live in a city with a high crime rate which heightens their anxiety. They are ESL students so their learning is twice as hard because they are not only learning content, but they are trying to learn the English language.
"I'm hungry and we did not have food at home." This is regularly said by my students.
They come to school with low-energy and empty stomachs which causes them to remain unfocused. Trying to stay focused while learning content and a new language is difficult for anyone, but imagine if your basic need of food was not being met- how could you focus?
Please help me provide snacks for my students. I would like to be able to give them an energy boost so they can focus and not worry about if and when they will get food.
I want to provide Jack Links and Slim Jims so they can have protein as it is important for developing kids. The Belvita and Chewy breakfast bars will help put pep in their step so they can have a great start to the day. The Sun Chips, animal Crackers, and Variety pack of chips will help tide them over when they are hungry.
Please consider helping my students. Give them an opportunity to focus on a full stomach rather than being unfocused and concerned about how they will find food.
