My students need colorful charts, posters, bulletin board trimmers and backing, privacy partitions and a stand to get the year started off in a positive direction.
The first day of school! The first day of school! I wonder who my teacher will be? I wonder what the room will look like?...
After 10 years of teaching computer technology in a self contained lab, I will be returning to a full time classroom position this fall.
I will be in a different room, which needs to be decorated top to bottom. I welcome the challenge, and look forward to new experiences with a classroom community of my own. The only problem? After years of NOT having to prepare a classroom that the same students will occupy all day long, all week long, all year long, I find myself not having anything decorative, bright, fun or motivating to display for their arrival.
Come September, I will be fortunate enough to be teaching a fourth grade gifted and talented class. In my school, the gifted and talented students are nicknamed "Eagle" classes. When my Eagles come home to roost in the fall, I want our nest to be feathered beautifully. Unfortunately, as of last year, our Department of Education does not budget a single dollar for teachers to buy room decorations or supplies.
My Project
I know all of my future students because they have all been, at one time or another, my computer students. I know them to be bright, verbal and curious. I want to start the year on the right foot, having a motivating, colorful and warm space for them to learn in with me. I need charts for a print rich environment, to encourage reading. They need motivational and informational banners to keep them interested in the work around them and remind them to stay on task. They need large writing chart tablets, a chart stand and pocket charts to share our writing and display our work around the classroom. They need privacy partitions for testing and quiet, independent work.
Students learn with all of their senses.
Even if there is good, solid instruction taking place, if they are not visually stimulated, they may tune out. Of course, the room should be and will be filled with student work. However, in the beginning of the year, bright, interesting and motivational decor starts my little Eagles in a beautifully feathered nest.
