My Project

Hello, my name is Nestor Guzman. I am a bilingual teacher and varsity soccer coach at FCA. Our school is located in Little Village, in the city of Chicago. The student body at our school is composed of over 90% low-income students and bicultural/bilingual. Media coverage from Little Village is seldom positive. Many times, our students are faced with little to no expectations for success. They feel written off and sometimes invisible to others around them.

However, the one place these young men feel seen, like they matter, like they mean something is on the playing field.

Working with the young men at FCA, I am reminded of their resilience, determination, and ability to overcome strenuous obstacles that a neighborhood like Little Village puts in front of them. The soccer team has become a family to the young men that have put on our team jersey. They find common ground with their teammates and learn to become leaders and young men of good character. They have proven time and time again that the family and support system they have created goes beyond our classroom walls, and is further cemented by the soccer pitch.

The equipment that we are requesting is to help us train and develop our team in hopes of leveling out the playing field with teams that have access to vast resources. For the last four seasons, we have been playing with old soccer balls and reusing our team uniforms past their prime. The equipment we are requesting in our project will go a long way in helping our young Admirals in developing their athletic skills, mental health, and physical well-being.
