My students are members of the Future Business Leaders of America Organization. We are from a rural area in West Virginia that is a great community, but we face many issues. The students are hard workers and very grateful for what they are given. The goal of the FBLA is to give the students an opportunity to excel in school which will lead to a productive life upon graduation.
According to census data 22% of children under 18 live in poverty and the median income is roughly $33,000.
While money is not everything, it does provide opportunities that children living in poverty are unable to have. The goal of our school organization is to give the students opportunities to improve their communities while gaining confidence and job skills.
My Project
Our FBLA students will be able to explore and learn about business and the importance of personal and professional skills and communication. They will gain invaluable life skills that will enable them to envision a successful life after high school. Many of our students are not able to take family vacations due to different home life reasons. On this field trip, they will travel to a large city (L.A.) and begin seeing life outside of their small rural community.
Coming from a low socioeconomic status, our students struggle with day-to-day motivation and foreseeing what the future can hold.
Thus, they often lack prior background knowledge on many skills that we take for granted. Our students need to see and experience the world to fully understand that there is a future for them and ensure they have the confidence and skills to pursue their dreams.
