Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a public charter school, proving that all children are capable of success, regardless of zip code, race, or other factors. 95% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and 99% of our students are students of color. 100% of our students are on the path to and through college.
My students are voracious readers, and they often cite independent reading check-ins as their favorite part of the week.
They love talking about the book they're reading: what's happening, who the characters remind them of, and how it connects to other aspects of their own lives. This excitement for learning helps propel them to persist in school, and increases their confidence as students and as proud people of color.
In order to develop my students' sense of ownership in their own classroom, I'm working to add titles to my classroom library that my students themselves picked out!
My Project
Thanks to donors like you, our students have developed their "taste" in reading: their favorite authors, genres, and topics. They helped select books at their level to add to our classroom library, and now all that's left to do is get them in students' hands!
The majority of our students completely rely on their classroom library - and by having a more robust selection of texts, a family's financial situation will not determine their access to reading.
These books have been hand-picked by my current 6th graders and are from their favorite authors and series. They match the reading levels of our highest-need students so we can better meet their needs. As 5th graders, these students could not WAIT to join my class and get books of their choice-- and I cannot wait for them to open their first delivery of choice books!
