My Students
The children that we serve are predominantly low-income, with 85% qualifying for free and reduced-priced lunch. Nestled in southern Harlem, our small school serves nearby children who live in the neighborhood as well as children who commute. Our students are energetic, creative, and hard-working.
This year, we are teaching in a blended learning environment.
Our first graders love reading and need engaging and mutli-cultural books in series. They will travel with their books to and from school, using them learn at home and in the classroom. Our first graders are ready to find their favorite characters in series and read avidly, one book after another. They are eager and enthusiastic, learning to be avid readers in school or while learning from home.
My Project
In first grade, students become interested in reading series books. These books are on first grade reading levels and have high interest characters and engaging themes. Many of the books contain diverse characters, so students can relate to the books and see themselves in the series. Students will be excited about reading and in a series, when they read one book, they will be eager to get the next one and keep reading. First graders grow substantially in their independent reading and comprehension skills. These books will allow for high interest reading and students will move from series to series, reading higher and higher levels and increasing their reading stamina. Within these stories, students will be taught fluency, comprehension, inferencing, and character studies. Students will be able to take these books home and travel with them as they read their series both at school and at home.
