My Students

Although my students have had difficult lives, they are resilient and determined to graduate with their class this year. They are considered at-risk. Many of them need to recover ten or more credits to graduate. Generally absenteeism is the most common reason they are behind. Some have had to stay home to babysit younger siblings because their parents have to work. Many are not traditional learners. They can not function in a regular high school classroom because it is not their style of learning. They need to do hands-on projects.

This program is their last opportunity to graduate from high school.

At this point, they are willing to do whatever it takes. They have been coming to school everyday, participating in class projects and working hard to realize their dreams.

My Project

My students stay in the same classroom all day. We do a variety of hands on projects throughout the school year. One ongoing project is a school garden. We started growing food in an effort to get students to eat healthy. However, they do not know what to do with the food we grow or how to cook it.

Over the years we have developed some recipes students like.

For example, we make empanadas with taro flour. The taro is grown and mixed with regular flour and a banana filling. We need the electric griddle to cook the empanadas. The blender we use to make smoothies with bananas and berries. We also use it to make hummus out of taro and eat it with chips made from the tapioca we grow. I also asked for a convection oven just to expand the possibilities. We use the taro flour to make a pizza crust and put the vegetables we grow on the pizza. The oven is big enough to cook two pizzas. The students really enjoy cooking. Last year, two graduates wanted to go on to culinary school.
