Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My fifth grade students have nicknamed me the "Vegetable Lady" since I am always eating fresh fruits and vegetables daily. (I teach a fifth grade general education class in Spanish Harlem.) The children are fascinated by the array of produce they see me bring to school and often want to sample it. I recently brought in vine-ripened tomatoes, baby carrots, Romano beans and red peppers for them to try. They devoured up the vegetables as if it was chocolate. Many of them had never seen some of these vegetables before and have been begging me to bring them vegetables daily. However, as I explained to them, this is a costly endeavor. That's where you come in. Please help me fund a class trip to the Union Square Farmer's Market, which is located on 14th Street in Manhattan. The Market offers a great range of organic and traditional fruits and vegetables, as well as breads and home-cooked pies! All of the vendors at the Union Square Farmer's Market come from small farms in NY, NJ, CT and PA. I would like my students to go to the Farmer's Market with me to pick out an assortment of items that will help them achieve a balanced diet, which we will study in science class. Further, since we will have a set amount of money to spend as a class, we will need to browse the market to see which vendors have the best products for the least expensive price. Hence, this trip is both a math and a science lesson! Finally, we will take the items back to school to clean, cut and enjoy them together. I will need a budget to cover the cost of the food for 26 children, plus the cost of a cutting board, strainer, peeler and knife (I'll be doing the cutting!). Please help me bring farm fresh food to my fifth graders.
