This school year, I have some tenacious readers. Not only are my students finishing books faster than ever before, they also want to read the same book in groups. Furthermore, they want a variety of fantasy series. My goal is to expose the students to as many fantasy series as possible this remaining school year.
This school year, I have a very diverse population.
There are students who are plunging into young adult novels while other students are still finding picture books a challenge. Overall, the class enjoys reading independently and appreciates the class time devoted to it. As a school, there is a climate of encouragement and regular practice of reading for both information and entertainment.
My Project
My primary activity for using these resources is to engage students in literature circles. Within a literature circle, students can discuss, argue, ask questions, assign chapters, refer to story elements, and analyze the novel. Then when the first book in the series is complete, they can move right into the next. However, switching into another series is acceptable when it comes to wanting to try something new.
It is important for students to not only read, but develop imaginations and opinions of their own.
If students have the opportunities (literature circles) and the resources to accomplish this, their literacy will flourish. In addition to this, it creates a great opportunity to compare the different fantasy novels available to read.
