My Students

Our student population is extremely diverse. Over 40 languages and dialects are spoken in the homes of our students. Many are the first generation in their families born in the United States. As a group, they are excited to learn and ripe for new adventures in learning. They are inquisitive, innovative, and crave complexity on a constant basis. They need curriculum and literature that ignites a fire in them.

At 10 years old you start to wonder about the world and your place in it.

I want to inspire them to see the deep connections between the world and themselves. Encouraging collaboration and communication is imperative to their success. Fostering their love of reading with truly engaging text and topics relevant to their lives by giving them the power to share their thinking with peers is one way to ensure this. I want to grab these young spirits and show them that knowing about their world can make them powerful. I believe that by having the supplies to make them successful that they will become agents of positive change in their own community.

My Project

Books are a powerful way to teach children important truths about the world. I have chosen wonderful fantasy books for my students to expose them to perspectives on perseverance, friendship, compassion, kindness, and diversity. We were so fortunate to have the author Alane Adams come speak to our school this year. She set our imaginations on fire. My students were clamoring for her books and cannot wait to delve into the imaginative world of the Legends of Orkney.

Reading is a child's superpower!

Losing themselves in the fantasy world permits them to examine truths about life, coming of age, and the complicated nature of humanity in a way that is accessible and entertaining. They can celebrate the triumphs and commiserate as heroes face challenges and rise to fight another day. These small group sets will bring the children together as they let their imaginations soar and escape to a land that is both foreign to them, yet at it's core, familiar. Little people need accessible ways to encounter, think about, and discuss big issues. I believe this collection of books will allow my students to meet challenging topics head on while fostering their love for great books. The Rocketbook will allow use to take notes about our thinking and scan them to add to our digital portfolios.Thank you for helping us fill our shelves and our hearts.
