My Students
My 8th grade students are incredibly talented, intelligent, brave, resilient, loving, and kind people. They have a thirst for knowledge and education that far outweighs what we are able to provide at our Title 1 school. Out of my 60 students, 6 are English learners, 3 of those having just moved to the US. My students love literature and always take advantage of my personal book request form so they can continue to read and grow. They will absolutely love this book.
My Project
This project is important to me because I am a firm believer in exposing my students to books they wouldn’t necessarily read by themselves. Our next unit is a fantasy unit, and I wanted to provide a book where students see themselves, but in a way that exposes them to troubles, they may not encounter every day. The author, Tomi Adeyemi, compares the struggles of her main characters to the struggles of many black and Latino people, and she does so in a way that prompts the reader to dig deeper. My students appreciate challenging work such as this. This would help my students to grow in reading literature while being engaged.
