My Students

The most common traits among the students in my Visual Art classes this year are enthusiasm, creativity, individuality and perseverance. My students range from 11 to 15 years old. They come from diverse socio-economic, religious, cultural and educational backgrounds.

When surveyed at the beginning of the class, this group reported speaking 22 different languages in their homes.

The most commonly reported first languages, besides English, were Vietnamese, Spanish, Somali, Oromo, Amharic, and Cantonese.

No matter how old they are, how much money their family has, or what language they speak at home, they all really enjoy engaging, hands-on art projects. My students and I are asking for your help to supply some materials needed for those projects this semester.

My Project

This project allows students to demonstrate their perspective drawing skills along with their shading skills and creativity. One of the expectations for this project is that students use a full range of light, medium and dark values to shade their work in a way that shows depth, time of day, and directional lighting. For example, the sky in the background of their drawing could be colored by blending two shades of orange, yellow, pink and purple together in a swirling design. By doing this, the artist would communicate the idea that that the sun is setting in their drawing. In addition, the same student might create long purplish shadows at the base of each of the buildings in their cityscape. This would show the location of their primary light source. Using color with this level of detail is much easier if you have broad spectrum of hues to work with.

With the new colored pencils packs, students will experience the joy of having more than one green to shade plants with, more than one tone of gray for their buildings, and sidewalks.

They will have access to a variety of browns, tans, beiges, and pinks, to use as skin tones on the people walking around in their fantasy city.

I have used this brand of colored pencil before, and I know that these pencils are soft enough to shade with, but solid enough to sharpen easily without breaking.

Each student will be responsible for checking out and returning their complete set of colored pencils each class period.
