My students need books where they can escape into fantasy worlds like "Uprooted" and books that can take them to places in America they have never seen like "The King is Always Above the People."
Our area continues to be a growing community that accepts students from all over our county. These students come with a variety of print experiences.
As our community has become more and more diverse, so too has our need for books that speak to the experiences of all kids.
This year we have instituted the Positivity Project. My hope is that by becoming more engaged in books, students will see characters demonstrating many of the positive traits we are teaching.
My Project
The emphasis for this book collection is to reach out to struggling readers who like fantasy and struggling readers who like hard knock stories.
These books show strong women taking on roles normally associated for men, such as in the relaunch of "Thor."
They also show the importance of the journey, whether that be as an immigrant or just an average teen trying to find his or her place in the world. These are books that will encourage students to empathize with each other and see themselves represented on the page.
I hope that by giving my students these reading choices that they will become life-long readers.
