Fantastic Scholastic

Help me give my students a year subscription to Scholastic News. This will provide a weekly opportunity for students to be exposed to current events through a colorful, on-level resource.

My Students

We are a small, rural school located in a town that borders an American Indian Reservation. We have about 260 students in our K-6 building. With the small town and and reservation there is a strong sense of family and community in our school as many students are related to one another as siblings, cousins, etc. This has been especially difficult during this Distance Learning time since our students are not able to maintain these relationships in person. Our students work hard; however, they are sometimes cut short by lack of materials or struggles due to home life. These circumstances are even more pronounced by students being forced to learn from home.

Many students have basic life needs such as food or mental health issues that must be met before they can focus on their education.

The lack of social interaction during this time increases their risk for mental health issues. Many students do not have electronic or internet access due to a lack of device or internet service. This limits their literacy exposure to only what is available inside their home and for many students is only what we send.

My Project

Students will be exposed weekly to on-level nonfiction reading that will give them a look into current events and connect with our science, social studies, and social skills curriculum. Students look forward to receiving more than just a printed black and white 'copy' or 'worksheet'. They get excited to read our very own kid friendly newspaper/magazine.

Many students do not have the literary resources at home that they need to consistently build on their reading skills.

This subscription will provide them with a take-home resource that is fun, engaging, and helps them increase their reading skills by getting progressively more difficult in the complexity as the year goes on. These weekly readings are also utilized to create our first non-fiction informational reports during our writing time.

Our students have positive experiences with Scholastic by having exposure through our school wide book fair. With this subscription, they will get excited to see them not only twice a year, but every week in our own classroom!
