Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like when you had the choice of choosing your own book to read? My 4th grade students with varying reading levels from 1st grade level all the way to 5th grade level are thirsty for a library that supports them at their reading level as well as their interests.
I teach 35 vibrant fourth grade students at an inner-city charter school in Southern California.
We implement an excellent reading program called Accelerated Reader (AR) which identifies the student's reading level and encourages students to strive to meet their goals and increase their reading level by taking reading quizzes on student selected books. A majority are struggling students and are in desperate need of books that are leveled for them, engaging, and culturally relevant for them to read. They are thirsty to read and thirsty to increase their reading levels.
My Project
I am requesting 5 sets of leveled literature and 1 book organizer. This new library of books will provide instant access to engaging and culturally-relevant books for all my readers as they strive to meet their reading goals and increase their love for reading. This collection of books will remain in the classroom and ensure that every child in my class, according to their interests and reading level, will always have access to a book through self-selection for our daily D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) time. This habitual practice of daily reading through self-selection encourages my students to be life-long readers and lovers of literature. As a teacher who just transitioned from Kindergarten to 4th grade in a time of economic crisis in public education, it saddens me that I have only a few books to offer my new thirty-five vibrantly growing readers.
As I gradually build my collection of books with my personal funds, I ask you help me by contributing to my process of creating the most awesome, exciting, and culturally-relevant classroom library any kid would be thrilled to have.
Every little bit counts! Do what you can to support literacy and public education.
