Fantastic First Graders Need Marvelous Math Centers

My students need math games and centers so they can practice essential math skills such as telling time, number sense, addition, and subtraction.

My Students

Teachers in the twenty-first century have the challenge of engaging students in school, when students want nothing more than to play video games and watch television. These math games and centers will help my students stay engaged while practicing essential math concepts and skills.

I teach at a Title 1 school, which means that the majority of students enrolled live in poverty.

These children are very excited about school. Many of them don’t have access to books or computers outside of school. Studies show that students coming from poverty are at a greater risk for dropping out of school. My students deserve the same opportunities as any other student in this country. These students work hard and deserve to have materials and activities that will help them become successful in school and life.

My Project

With these math centers my students will have many chances to practice necessary skills. The variety of centers will assure the students will stay engaged while mastering their math skills. When students are engaged in meaningful centers the teacher is free to teach small math groups to ensure students do not leave the class with large gaps in their education. This small group time is possibly the most important time in the day for struggling students, because they receive instruction catered to their learning styles and needs. Without meaningful centers the students become bored and behavior problems interfere with small group instruction.

Many students struggle with math concepts, because they do not have a strong foundation to build upon.

With these math games and centers my first graders will have more opportunities to practice essential math skills. More practice will lead to mastery of these skills, and with mastery students will gain confidence in their abilities. Mastery of these first grade math standards will give students the foundation they need to be successful with future math concepts.
