Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"In art, the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can imagine," said Ralph Waldo Emerson. My students need the inspiration of seeing graphic art and other images to relate to their stories. They can recreate this art with paint, brushes, paper and an imagination from the heart.
My students are a bright group of six and seven year olds that are underprivileged and have limited access to technology and art supplies .
These boys and girls are eager to learn and come to school with smiles on their faces! They are full of life and find great joy in making new discoveries. Each one is unlocking the door to reading and expressing their ideas about these books. My students are motivated to explore their world and read their way to understanding. Our school strives to promote the Leader in Me concepts which encourages students being proactive in their learning. We teach students to begin with the end in mind, so choosing a setting or character in a book to recreate through art is a great place to start! The joy they experience reading good literature can be felt in the classroom. These students deserve to have every opportunity to be the best that they can be! Readers today will be leaders tomorrow. It is my goal to provide them opportunities to express their ideas!
My Project
My students will take pictures or find an image using the iPad to capture the setting of a story they are reading. They will continue to search for graphic images that depict characters from their story or realistic pictures that portray the turning point or plot. Using colorful paint and brushes, they will recreate their image to share with their friends and family. Students will discover dot painting, as the artist Seurat employed, and they may explore with glitter paints. We will use a laminator to preserve those images for display in the hall. Relating a picture or image to a concept in a story stimulates thinking and challenges students to make mental connections with the material. My students will comprehend the author's purpose or setting and choose images to represent those ideas. First graders will synthesize information to create their own artistic design to share. This type of expression inspires mental connections with characters and concepts in literature. Let's think!
It is my personal goal to create future leaders in my classroom every day.
My young students come from a poor community. They have limited resources and access to technology and art supplies. By challenging students to select graphic art and images to relate to the elements of a story they have read, they will extend their comprehension of a book. Then they will dip into paint, papers and doodads to recreate their art image. This will inspire students to stretch their imaginations! Let's go!
