Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in my second year of teaching in a low income neighborhood! Each day when I come into the classroom, I am so excited to get to make such an incredible impact on my students' lives. Our school is a Title I school with almost all of our population qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch! As a new teacher to first grade, there are a lot of expenses that come with setting up a productive and functional classroom! A lot of this money comes out of my own pocket as our district does not have the budget to support new teachers in this way.
I want my students to be able to reach their full potential!
This year is incredibly exciting for me as I have always hoped to get the opportunity to teach first grade! This new grade brings new challenges and learning experiences for both me and the students in my class. We get to experience first grade together, learning from one another and helping to push each other to reach our full potential for them as students and for me as their teacher.
My Project
While I already have some individual book boxes for my students, I do not have enough to outfit my entire class as I will have more students than I did last year! Each student needs their own book box in order to have a selection of books based on our unit of study, their personal reading level and our reading groups. I also would like to get some big comfy pillows in order to create a library space where students want to sit and read.
Since we won't have cubbies in my new classroom, I will use the hanging file folders to create a "mailbox" for each student where their finished work can go before heading home!
Important notes and forms can be put in this mailbox for students to receive.
I also hope to get some basic supplies such as new markers, laminating pouches, and a crayon sharpener in order to create a fantastic first grade classroom in which our supplies last as long as possible to support our learning.
