My students need books for the classroom library, that peak their interest, and excite their intellect. They also need bean bags and a storage cart for an inviting environment.
Wow - I'm about to lose my mind with joy! There is joy in the room! Many of the students are now discovering the wonderful world of books. Students are so excited about reading. There is discovery, adventure, far away places, new things, extraordinary people, unfathomable sights, and new information!
My school is located in a tourist town.
The school has a 50% transient rate. Our students move at least twice during the school year. Many rotate back to us as the seasons change. The largest industry is seasonal hospitality employment. My students are the marginalized and disenfranchised. Their parents are migrant workers, first generation immigrants, seasonal workers, or wandering homeless. Wandering homeless (transient) refers to parents who move from place to place as employment opportunities presents itself. Therefore many of these students do not have books at home. They rely on the classroom library to sustain interesting reading materials. Many of these students are one to three grade levels below in reading. They lack the resources to get to a public library or purchase books. By providing interesting, fun, and challenging reading materials, my students have found joy in reading. This joy has shown improvement in comprehension, fluency, and a growth in reading levels.
My Project
When you walk into Mrs. A's reading room, you will see children everywhere reading. You will see books of every genre and level. You will see students in partners, reading in groups, and students reading by themselves. This is a wonderful sight. No longer will I have to limit a few books to a few students. No longer will I have to tell a student that they can not borrow my books for the night, because there are not enough to go around. No longer will I have outdated books that do not peak the interest and excitement of my students. I also want to create comfortable seating, quiet, warm, and an inviting reading environment that has great storage. Finally I will see the joy on my student's faces when they see the type of books they like. I see gains in reading for fun and with the side effect of reading fluency and comprehension.
My students do not have access to books.
The library is too far away, and parents do not have reliable transportation. Donations of various types of reading materials will give my students the interest that they need to read more. I have noticed that the more my students read, the better their reading fluency and comprehension has grown. I see great enthusiasm in reading interest. My test scores have improved and most importantly, my students have developed a joy for reading.
