This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The materials and supplies I am requesting will be used by nearly 70 high school students who are learning to love the fiber arts: knitting, crocheting, sewing, embroidery, and quilting. These students range from expert crafters to total newbies, but they all share one thing in common: they want to spend two hours a week in a supportive, comfortable creative community of crafters! We will be learning the basics of those five fiber arts, designing and creating individual projects, and completing a class granny squares quilt to symbolize our community. We will also have guest speakers to talk with students about how to use their new skills to create personalized gifts, improve their mental health, or even start a small business with their crafts.

My students are Black and Brown kids from the south side of Chicago who are smart, ambitious, and dedicated to expressing themselves through art.

We started this class with 30 students last semester, and since have doubled in size due to its popularity--and we still have a waiting list! Please consider helping us out!
