My Students
Our students continue to prove that children from low-income neighborhoods can thrive.
PS 154 school sits in the middle of the poorest congressional district in the United States.
We have the third-highest percentage of single mothers in America and host some of the nation's highest childhood asthma rates. Ten years ago, our school was one of the city's lowest-performing schools. It was a chaotic place, simply focused on providing a safe environment for students to visit during the day.
Today, ours is a model school whose teachers embrace responsive classroom teaching strategies. Students' math scores have increased from their record lows by three hundred percent. Parent satisfaction and support for school efforts are high, teachers provide innovative and engaging instruction, and everyone involved with the school rates its leadership top notch. In large part, our collaborative and effort-focused school culture has helped students embrace a growth mindset; the idea that struggle and even failure breeds success. These lessons are embedded in everything we do.
My Project
Our school gym is roasting hot in the summer months. As I type this, it's 90 degrees in our gym space and horribly humid.
This project funds four industrial wall-mounted fans to circulate and cool our gymnasium learning space in the summer months.
Most spaces in our school are cooled via window air conditioners, but the gym space is far too large for a similar cooling solution. Your support will help us utilize our gym space throughout the year for physical education class. Our alternative is for students to engage in modified physical education activities in their classrooms on hot and humid days. This is of course less than ideal. Students need space to run and practice the skills they learn in phys. ed. Conducting physical education in a traditional classroom limits students learning and deepens the inequity apparent in low-income schools.
