Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are hungry. For books. Like worms eating leaves, these bookworms seek to devour stories on pages! Our book club has 15 members who meet every week during lunch in the library. They LOVE the printed word.

Our school contains a comprehensive high school and two magnet schools serving the working class community in a geographically isolated region in northeastern Los Angeles.

Our students are ethnically diverse with no one group holding a majority and have diverse interests from calculus to movies to Japanese to vampires Moreover, 15 of them formed a book club as curious, avid readers who love the smell of real paper books! However, with 73% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged, many cannot afford the luxury of books for themselves, nevermind a book every few weeks for book club. Moreover, with 15 members, it is difficult for them all to access the same book through our libraries.

My Project

The books bought with your donation will be given to book club members so they may each read the book and be prepared to talk about the book at book club meetings. The students will then be able to keep the book for their personal library. The book club is completely student run -- they choose the books, set the dates, and lead the discussions. There are a mix of students from all grade levels and this year we are excited to have some freshman who are eager to help the club grow the next few years! I hope that years later they may look back at their book club library and remember a place that supported their love of reading. For many of these students, being able to share reading with others is a rare experience.

In addition to the literacy benefits, having one’s passion acknowledged and shared fosters confidence and creates community.

It is inspiring to see young people blossom and grow in a community of readers. Please help support our hungry bookworms.
