This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a PE and mindful movement teacher in a high poverty school, I recognize that my students face multiple difficulties at home and at school. Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. They arrive to each school day with challenges that I can't even imagine, from seeing domestic violence to wondering where they will sleep at night. Since I teach every student from kindergarten through fifth grade, my program serves students with a range of disabilities; talented and gifted students, students with intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and students with high sensory needs.

Despite the many challenges students face, I endeavor to provide fun, creative, educational movement experiences.

In my mindful movement class, students practice moving thoughtfully, mainly through yoga. Research suggests that mindfulness can help offset the effects of trauma, making students more ready to learn. In P.E., I emphasize fun, movement and teamwork. As students learn to succeed in many different ways of moving, they gain confidence. I cannot prevent all the difficulties in my students' lives, but I can give them tools to release stress and keep their bodies and minds healthy.

My Project

My students need opportunities to hone their ball handling skills. In soccer, we practice many different kicks, from long distance punts to soft-touch passes. Soccer combines coordination and cardiovascular exercise--two ingredients for lifelong health. Both cardio and coordination also improve academic readiness--physical fitness improves cognition. Students will be able to practice individual ball skills, as well as play small-sided games and whole-class matches. Your generous donation to our project will improve our gym classroom by building a stronger ball skills and overall confidence. Soccer is the most popular sport at this school, by far. Having enough balls for a comprehensive soccer program will change our students' lives for the better. With a strong PE program, students come to love school and feel physical success at an early age --- leading toward enduring wellness!

Soccer is by far the most popular sport among my students. It is a brilliant sport because all that is required is a ball, a flat surface and a few markers for goals. With strong ball skills my students will have a great way to stay active after school and across their lifespans. Help set the stage for enduring health--and help students have fun with soccer!--by supporting my project.
