My Students

There is nothing like the feeling of getting lost in a good book. Reading can take us places we've never been, and show us people that we never thought could exist. By the end of the year, I want my students to understand how to choose a book that's just right for them so that they'll love reading!

My students are the greatest first graders on Earth!

They are curious about the world around them and love spending each day working hard to overcome the social and economic obstacles around them through getting a top notch education. My school is in an impoverished neighborhood in New Orleans that's doing its best to recover from Hurricane Katrina. Although my students are not old enough to have experience Katrina for themselves, they still feel its effects each day. Despite this, however, my children come into school each day eager to learn and improve their reading and math skills, and I know that they are doing what it takes to set themselves up for success for now and the future.

My Project

In my classroom, we have a block of time each day called "Readers Workshop". During this time, my students are able to select ten books of their choice each week to read independently. We use this time to build our independent reading stamina, and my students can already read for ten minutes all by themselves. More books in my classroom will mean that my students will have a better chance of finding a book that interests them, and having books that range a large span of reading levels will help me ensure that I am supporting their reading growth throughout the whole year.

By donating to this project, you're helping to ensure the recovery of New Orleans in years to come by helping me educate its children.

My children deserve a chance to rise up above their economic status to achieve their full potential, and the only way to do this is to allow them as many opportunities as possible to become literate people. Your donation will provide me with the materials necessary to push my children as readers so that they can one day use their education to improve their city.
