About My Students

At our urban high school, we are struggling to get our STEM program established. A dedicated student committee, Tyjoleer, Tyonna, Sade, Logan and Shamere, is trying to get donations to build a solid foundation of learning which can impact my fellow students, staff and community family members as well. We want to have a classroom lab and an outdoor learning center which will be our new STEM activity areas where the learning potential will be greatly increased. Our school does not have the technology we need to be more successful in life. We want to help ourselves, but we also want to help our community too. We are the future here, and we want to make school a positive experience for everyone.

First, we will decide which historical figures we will become for our interactive museum of civil rights leaders from the past. Once we decide who we will become, we will spend many hours doing research about our historical figures. We will then recreate the person through words and actions to get other students actively engaged in the person's speeches and questions. We will pass out cards with the person's picture and information, so students can learn about their heritage and history. The entire museum will be a team activity where we can all work together as a whole to present our history to others. Also, it is a valuable way to build our confidence when we do these presentations. The research will include writing skills, social studies concepts and even math equations in some cases.

In Their Own Words

We want all students to know their heritage. To accomplish this, our principal is having us do a civil rights project. We thought it would be incredible to bring civil rights leaders to life in an interactive experience for younger students. You can't just know things by reading a book. You have to explore the world by interacting with people in and around our neighborhood. We want to do this feat by breathing life into leaders from the past. We want to bring students a hopeful message which can guide them to a better future. You have to know your past, so you can be proud of yourself in the present!

All of us want to be the future leaders of our community. This can not be done through just taking notes and sitting in a chair for an hour. We want to know our history, so we can our own history which will make our neighbors proud of us. We want to become these leaders through artwork representing themselves and get into discussions with others to get them to understand our past. Younger and older students will be able to meet us in a comfortable setting and discuss real life issues from today's world while learning about our rich past.

This project is a labor of love among all of us. It won't be easy to do research, create speeches and questions to interact with other students. We may have difficulties at times, but we will work hard to accomplish our job. We must provide information about our history, so we can build upon this historical foundation. This foundation will enable us to explore ourselves in the context of being better people through the struggles of our past civil rights leaders. We want our school and our community to come together with bonds of friendship and pride. Without this, we won't be able to accomplish all the goals set out for us at our school.
