My Students

My students are so excited to start getting hands-on STEAM experiences in our new Innovation Lab. We will delve into 3D printing, robotics, and programming, as well as many other hands-on projects. It is so fun to watch their faces light up when they see the results of their own creations.

The students are curious and creative, imaginative and innovative.

I love hearing their new ideas. We are a diverse school with many cultures and languages, and STEAM experiences are great at bringing everyone together for a common goal.

My Project

Our school recently created an Innovation Lab where students can learn about coding, robotics, 3D printing, and other STEM activities. One of the activities we want to offer is an un-maker space. In addition to making things, the students can take things apart (i.e. un-make) to learn how machines work, as well as learn how to use basic tools, understand electronics, read diagrams, and parts assembly.

These un-maker kits will be available for the students to check-out from school and take home to share the activity with their family.

The kits will each contain an electronic item, a screwdriver set, and a parts bin with a magnetic bottom to contain screws. Families from the school can donate unwanted electronics they have (without batteries) for use in the un-maker kits. These items will be old handheld phones, clock radios, VCRs, keyboards, typewriters, etc.

When the kit is taken home, families will then search online for a parts diagram. They will take the device apart, and identify the different mechanical and electrical components. The goal would then be to put the device back together in it’s original state. By doing so, students will learn critical thinking to try to understand how the parts work together and draw their own parts diagram.

By sharing this experience with their families at home, the students are able to appreciate their devices more, rather than viewing them as a “black box.” Furthermore, by learning about how things work, and building confidence to take them apart and reassemble them, it will foster an attitude that devices are fixable, and not expendable when they no longer work.
