it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This photography project aims to build empathy and community within our class. We'll create family portraits and document our surroundings. Many families don’t have professional photos, so we'll provide each student with a high-quality picture, and a class album celebrating our diverse families and neighborhoods.
Discussions will be sparked by reading "Family Pictures" and "I Love Us." Students will connect with the stories and develop compassion for others' struggles, reflecting experiences common in our low-income area (housing insecurity, single parents, immigration).
We'll invite families for portrait sessions, offering them a free display-worthy photo. This project allows students to connect with their families creatively and appreciate the beauty and diversity within their communities. The class album will be a testament to each family's unique story.
This project goes beyond offering an alternative to expensive portraits. We'll ensure respectful representation and, in the future, capture real moments in families' lives. Student interviews alongside photos can help us understand personal stories and struggles. This can lead to identifying needs and taking action, like raising awareness or connecting families with support services.
Project success will be measured by participation, photo quality, the album's creativity, and most importantly, students' reflections on how the project deepened their understanding of family, community, and compassion.
