Help me give my students a hard drive on which they can save videos of Oral Hxstory interviews and the necessary items to upgrade a donated laptop that will help them edit for their website.
My students currently attend one of the largest and most diverse schools in California. My students continuously come into class with eyes and minds wide open ready to learn and make sense of the world around them. They are hungry for education.
The large majority of my students are minorities, come from working class immigrant families, and they have been a blessing to have in my classroom under the current socio-political situation, despite what their families are facing.
My students range from 9th - 12th grade, as the classes I have them in are an elective and part of their Ethnic Studies graduation requirement, though 90% of them are freshmen.
They, to me, represent the best of what their communities have in store for the future. As I stated above, they are hungry for education- willing to look at all perspectives to be able to create their own ideas about what it means to be a part of this nation.
My Project
Technology and video has become such an integral part the 21st Century classroom. My Ethnic Studies and US Hxstory classes are no exception to this. In my classes, we see our families' experiences as vital pieces of this nation's great history. My students bridge the gap between the historical context and their current experiences by looking into their families' experiences, via Oral Hxstories.
By donating to this project, you will help ensure that oral histories continue to serve as content resources for all of my students, as the interviews provide richer and fuller accounts of important historical events and experiences than many traditional sources.
Students will also continue to develop an Oral History website to provide a database for historical resources available to the public.
The current version of the website we've created lacks real video footage. It currently exists at: https://sites.google.com/nhusd.k12.ca.us/jlhs-es-oralhistoryproject/home
