Family Matters!

Help me give my students a PowerMyLearning Family Engagement Innovators kit so that I can assist my students with leveraging their “learning by teaching” strategies to teach their family members at home.

My Students

I am an ESE (Special Education)/Reading teacher and the family liaison at a K-8 center in Miami. I teach and support students that have learning difficulties and/or disabilities in all subject areas and grade levels in our K-8 school. My school is a Title I school which means that about 99% of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch due to their low socioeconomic status. The school is in a high poverty neighborhood so many of my students come from families who struggle financially. As a result, my students endure more problems than average children, and these problems interfere with and hinder their learning.

My Project

The PowerMyLearning Family Engagement Innovators Program will provide me the opportunity to train my students on how to engage their family members in learning.

This will make a difference in my students' life because not only will they be learning new material but they will have the opportunity to share what they have learned with the family members at home.

Giving students the opportunity to teach their family members will encourage family involvement. Family members will be able to work together in order to build connections and bonds all while learning together. The best part about this program is that it allows the teacher to train other teachers to also spread the work and train more students to increase family engagement.
