Family Math Night

Help me give my students math resources to help facilitate a hands on math night for families from our community.

My Project

Math today is not like it used to be. There are so many different strategies or ways to solve problems that are introduced to students. This can become problematic when students are working at home with their families to practice skills learned in the classroom. Families may not be aware of the different ways there are to solve problems and may not have or know of resources that they could use to help their children at home.

In order to address this issue, I think a great community service effort for my students would be to host an event where families come out to work on various math activities led by students.

I will teach my students the importance of helping others learn to solve math problems! Students would help lead the math night and be able to showcase the various strategies they have worked on and ways that math can be practiced in the home setting as a reinforcement. They will teach their parents and other students the many strategies needed to be successful mathematicians.

In order to facilitate an event like this, we would need a wide variety of math tools to help students engage with their families and put their math work into practice. The rekenrek kits included would be a great tool for students to make with parents and students to use for number sense reinforcement. The ten frames, counters and other manipulatives would help provide a hands on learning session. Students and families working together would benefit home learning as well as help improve students' understanding in the classroom.

By teaching others, my students will gain a greater confidence in their abilities and help others better understand what they are learning in school!
