Family Fun: Taking Learning Off-Screen

My Students

Every day, I have the privilege of being able to see two dozen smiling students, eager and ready to learn. I teach in an urban school with students from a wide range of backgrounds. This year, we are teaching and learning 100% remotely for at least the first semester, which makes establishing strong connections even more critical.

Being fully remote with my students has allowed me to learn not only about them, but their families as well.

They are engaged and want to help their children succeed in school and beyond. Despite the challenges that exist in our world today and the difficulties that remote learning can create, my students work hard and truly strive to be the best they can be. They are truly incredible!

My Project

Just because school is out doesn't mean that learning has to end for students. In our classroom, I strive to encourage hands-on learning experiences with games and interactive activities. With the right tools, students and their families can continue to learn about math, STEM, and problem-solving outside of school.

Brainteaser and logic puzzles are naturally inviting to students, easily adaptable for a range of skill levels, and promote persistence and grit.

I am requesting a class set of games that teach coding skills, problem-solving, and math concepts. By providing each student with a game, they will have the opportunity to practice these skills independently or with family members. Each of the games, such as Hopper, Dog Crimes, and Swish, promote visual perception and logical reasoning through tiered activities. Students can help younger siblings with an easier task, or play at a more challenging level on their own or with an adult. The games also encourage language development, which is crucial for my students who are English language learners.

Giving each child a game of their own to share with loved ones will keep students engaged, learning, and having fun while out of school and beyond. Thank you for your support!
