I teach in a self-contained special education classroom in the northwest part of Las Vegas, Nevada. I teach eleven energetic, inquisitive, and amazing students. I provide support to these students in the academic areas of reading, writing, and math. My students are also working on learning skills, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, social skills, language skills, and behavior skills. They are visual learners and benefit from having adapted books and plenty of classroom visuals.
My students are very diverse.
My Project
Once a month we have a family engagement day in our classroom. Our students and their families are invited to come into the classroom and learn something new. I would like to give the families the opportunity to come prepare a snack or a meal with their children each month. The child-sized cooking utensils and items will be perfect for their little hands.
When families include their children in meal prep they are helping them develop a positive connection to all food types, especially fruits and vegetables.
Cooking with children will teach them so many essential skills such as reading, counting, following directions, and measuring. Spending time with children in the kitchen teaches healthy habits and creates family bonds.
